Le passage du Gois
A mythical route between sea and marsh
Located just a few minutes from the Parc des Mimosas, the Passage du Gois is much more than a road: it's a unique experience, a magical place where the sea decides the schedule. This submersible path linking the island of Noirmoutier to the mainland attracts thousands of curious visitors, hikers and nature lovers every year.
🌊 A legendary route, to the rhythm of the tides
4.2 km long, the Passage du Gois is only accessible at low tide, for a few hours only. At high tide, it disappears beneath the waves, leaving only the beacons emerging from the water. This singularity makes it a listed site, rare in the world, and totally emblematic of the island.
Always check the tide tables before using it!
🐚 On foot or by car... but always with care
At low tide, you can cross the Gois on foot, by bike or by car. The crossing offers spectacular views over the marshes, the Bay of Bourgneuf and the sea horizon. It's also a fisherman's paradise: clams, cockles and oysters lurk in the sand for those who know how to look.
But beware: the sea is rising fast! The Gois remains a natural passage that must be respected. Shelters on stilts have been set up to provide shelter in the event of carelessness.
📍 From the Parc des Mimosas
Located just a few kilometers from the start of the Gois on the Noirmoutier side, the Parc des Mimosas is an excellent starting point for admiring or crossing it. The best time to visit is in the early morning, or at the end of the day, to enjoy the magnificent light and peaceful atmosphere.
Why not plan an escapade at low tide, followed by lunch at the Port du Bonhomme or a return trip along the Corniche Vendéenne route?
After exploring one of the region's most stunning sites, there's nothing like returning to the peace and comfort of your own home at Parc des Mimosas. Private garden, fully-equipped kitchen, easy access to beaches and the town center... all in a green setting in the heart of Noirmoutier.
